Log-Core Integration

Instructors: John Nieto, Ross McLean, David Kelly
Date: May 8, 2008
Max. attendance: 20 Participants
Course Fee: $500

Venue: ERCB Core Research Centre – #3545 Research Way NW Calgary, T2L 1Y7

This course provides an in-depth look at the integration of wireline log response and rock lithofacies as seen in core. The course instructors will take several carbonate and clastic formations at the Core Research Centre and demonstrate that these can be subdivided based upon log response. This classification leads to a reservoir 'facies' curve which can be used directly in shared Earth Modeling, petrophysical evaluation and reservoir engineering. Course attendees may be Geoscientists, Petrophysicists or Reservoir Engineers. A basic knowledge of core lithofacies description and wireline log response would be an advantage, but is not essential. By the end of the day, attendees will have a better appreciation of techniques of integrating core description and wireline logs in to their daily workflow.

John Nieto is currently Vice President of Exploration for Canbriam Energy, a junior oil and gas company with a Canadian and U.S focus. Prior to this, he was V.P Exploration for Esprit Energy Trust, responsible for G&G in Ab, B.C and Sask operations. John also has a formation evaluation background, having been in charge of Anadarko Canada's formation evaluation effort and also Global Head of formation evaluation for ExxonMobil based in Houston. He has a BSc (Dual Hons) in Geology from London University and a D.M.T in Mineral technology from the Camborne School of Mines. John is currently a member of the CWLS and was the Society's President in 2005.

Ross McLean is recently retired  after a 28 year exploration career primarily with Amoco Canada, and subsequently Union Pacific Resources-Anadarko Canada-Canadian Natural Resources. He has mainly focused on carbonate plays, particularly in the Devonian of western Canada, with an emphasis on facies analysis, sedimentology and diagenesis, play development, biostratigraphy and regional interpretations. He has a BSc (Hons) and PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia.
